Portugal is a well-kept secret – a country of rugged landscapes, sophisticated cities, rural backwaters and sharply contrasting traditions. Diverse landscapes abound from the vineyards of the Douro valley to the dramatic cliffs of Madeira and the Algarve’s glorious beaches.
THE ALGARVE The Algarve stretches across southern Portugal, deriving its name from the Arabic El-Gharb meaning ‘west’. Blessed with beautiful sandy beaches and a year-round Mediterranean climate, it has become a holiday playground for North Europeans. Due to its mild climate, Portugal’s leading golf courses are found in the Algarve, whilst sunbathers delight in the golden, sandy beaches. Watersports are available, visits to picturesque fishing villages and deep-sea fishing. Visit Faro’s lively cafés, smart shops, cobblestone streets, grand houses with wrought-iron balconies and the 13th century cathedral in the Cidade Velha (Old Town).
MADEIRA The Madeira Archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, consists of the main island, Porto Santo and two groups of uninhabited islands. The ‘Pearl of the Atlantic’ has a mild climate, subtropical vegetations, cascading streams and mountain peaks that seem to thrust from the ocean. Popular with ramblers and flower enthusiasts, Madeira is often called the ‘Floating Garden’. The bustling capital, Funchal, has museums and historic buildings, charming restaurants and shops. |
