This tiny island in the heart of the Mediterranean offers a warm welcome,an abundance of history and the guarantee of sunshine virtually all year round. Often overlooked by its bigger and more fashionable neighbours,Malta is an island where the British will always find a warm hospitable welcome due to its past history as an English colony. Many nations have occupied Malta over the years creating a fascinating and eclectic culture.
With over 6000 years of civilisation, the land is covered in temples and monuments which bear witness to these past civilisations – some date back earlier than the Pyramids. In the meandering streets of the towns and villages Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces are found around every twist and turn.
Originally a fishing village and then a summer residence for wealthy locals, St Julians is now a major resort with an abundance of restaurants, cafes and nightlife to suit all ages groups. Surprisingly perhaps, the traditional brightly coloured Maltese boats can still be seen in the harbour most of the year round. Nearby in Valetta, the Cathedral of St. Johns and the Grand Master’s Palace boast stunning architecture, not to be missed. Popular too are excursions to the spectacular caves of the Blue Grotto, the medieval walled city of Mdina and the islands of Gozo and Comino. |
